The traditional manner of making Sambhar Rice can be a bit of a long process. First, you have to make the Sambhar and rice separately, then mix the two together and cook for a few minutes, finally adding the tempering.
I learned a simple Sambhar Rice recipe in Hyderabad from one of my neighbors – a Tamilian aunt. I had attended a family celebration and there they had served about 8-9 varieties of rice dishes. Later, when talking to her about the rice dishes, she taught me her secret recipe.
